Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan objectives

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) aims to educate all children between the ages of 6 to 14 

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan is an Indian Government program aimed at the universalisation of primary education, the 86th Amendment to the Constitution of India making free and compulsory education to children between the ages of 6 to 14, a fundamental right (Article- 21A).


The program was introduced by former Indian Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee. It aims to educate all children between the ages of 6 to 14 by 2010. However, the time limit has been pushed forward indefinitely.


Children who fail to read in early education lag behind in other subjects. The program is meant to enhance comprehensive early reading, writing, and early mathematics program for children in Classes I and II.


Under this program, ₹762 crores were approved to States. The program won't only provide the print-rich environment, timely distribution of books but also will include new teachers mentoring and appraisal system.


Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan has been functioning since 2000-2001 to provide for a variety of interventions for universal access and retention, bridging of gender and social category gaps in education and improving the standard of learning.


Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan interventions include the opening of new schools and alternate schooling facilities, additional classrooms, and the construction of schools, drinking water and toilets, provisioning for teachers, regular teacher in service training and academic resource support, free textbooks& uniforms and support for improving learning achievement levels/outcome.
